Fast Footographs

It's the goal of every race driver to set foot in Victory Lane. Fans like it too! Whitney Meier and Jarryd Eliff raced their way to the black and white at Atlanta Motor Speedway for this footograph.

On the outside wall of the track leading in to turn one at the historic Indianapois Motor Speedway, Jeff Schmatz takes advantage of the chance to walk across the track early in the morning of race day 2008.

From their new seats in the Paddock at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Jeff Schmatz, Tim Smith, Jason Smith, Dave Smith and Bill Hummel take a quick footograph before the grandstands fill up for the 2008 Indy 500.

Arriving at the Indianpolis Motor Speedway more than 5 hours before the Indy 500 has its benefits. Jason and Dave Smith prop their feet up on the SAFER Barrier along the first turn of the track. A portion of the track is open to pedestrians early in the morning on raceday, which allowed Jason and Dave to actually stand on the track for this footo.

Prior to the start of the 2008 Indianapolis 500, Tim Smith grabs a fast footograph in front of the entrance to historic Gasoline Alley - the garages for the 33 race cars entered in the race.

As part of the 20th Anniversary of the Ostrich Festival in Chandler AZ, large ostrich bodies were created, decorated and displayed in downtown Chandler. Most people are familiar with turkey legs at large festivals, but who could resist these "ostrich legs"? These two very unique footographs come to us from Pam Schuler.

Why, you ask, are these ostrich feet on the Fast Feet page? Well, I wanted to put these footos in Flying Feet - but an ostrich is one of those rare birds which doesn't fly. I thought about Jungle Feet - but ostriches actually live in the savannas north and south of the equatorial forests in Africa. So, how about Foreign Feet? Nope, these footographs were taken in Arizona. When ostriches are being chased, they've been known to run as fast as 40mph. So, we're calling these footos Fast Feet. Thanks Pam!

At the Allstate 400 @ the Brickyard (NASCAR race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway), Kim and Brandon Smith snap this footograph on the racetrack shortly before the start of the race. They had just had their picture taken with Best Buy Racing driver Jeff Green who was climbing into his car to start his engine as this footo was taken.

During the rain delay for the 2007 Indy 500, Dave and Jason Smith toured the Indy Racing League exhibit in the infield of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Behind their feet is the IRL Championship Trophy - for which all the drivers are competing.
At one time, the entire 2 1/2 miles of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was paved with brick, hence giving the great racecourse the nickname "The Brickyard." Now, all that remains of the original brick is a one yard wide strip at the start finish line. Dave and Jason Smith had the chance to stand on the famous "Yard of Brick" during the rain delay for the 2007 Indianapolis 500. Nice footo!

Rainy days and race days.....! Rain may have caused delays in the 2007 Indy 500, but it didn't dampen the spirits of Tim Smith and Alex Garcia as they sat in their seats watching the safety trucks run lap after lap of the 2 1/2 mile oval trying to dry the track in preparation for what turned out to be a fantastic race!

While strolling the infield of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the rain delay in the 2007 Indy 500, Tim Smith found Hiro Matsushita's car from last year's race in the Panasonic Booth at Fanfest.

Steve Smith visits the famous "Yard of Brick" at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as an Indy Racing League car speeds by at more than 230 miles per hour! OK, so the car was actually stopped, but it certainly makes for a great footograph on the start-finish line of "The Greatest Spectacle In Racing."
2006 Indy 500
On Indy 500 raceday at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, fans who arrive several hours before the race are permitted to walk across the track. Making that walk has become a tradition for many fans as setting foot on the most famous racecourse in the world is certainly a treat. These photographs were taken on raceday 2006 at about 8:30am.

This footograph is of Tim Smith's foot in the grassy area between the first turn and the exit from the pits in turn one.

This is also Tim's foot on the white line on the inside of the track entering turn one.

This footograph is a closeup of Brandon Smith's foot on the track in the main straightaway. Notice the grooved racing surface under Brandon's foot.

This footograph shows the crowd on taking advantage of the track walk opportunity, more than five hours before the start of the race.

Footograph five is actually a foot-level view showing the track where these footographs were taken.

Finally, this footograph shows the feet of Bill Hummel, Dave Smith and Brandon Smith in the grandstands of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway several hours before race time.
